Look up, up, up. Over there, in the corner, just under the ceiling. Follow that knob-ended stick to the trap door it releases. You never saw a knob-ended stick open a trap door in the kitchen wall?

You must not have grown up in a very old house.

Your stove top probably has some sort of ventilation hood hanging over it, vented via ductwork to the outdoors. My parents' kitchen has a knob-ended stick to yank, and when you do the door releases and a built-in fan starts whirring, terrifying the dumb birds who perpetually think its warm vent is a good place to build a nest.

What most modern construction lacks is trap-doored walls, don't you think?

This post is part of a series on the details I love in my parents' home. For the previous post, go here. Pin It
